How to Have the Good Life Living in a Foreign Country

Living in a strange land can be most distressing even for the most avid traveler. It’s an entirely different scenario when it comes to living in a foreign country as opposed to visiting it.

Once you become a resident in this new country you are expected to comply with the laws and customs of the land. This is most likely a huge adjustment. How big will depend on the differences between what you are used to and the new country. For example, if you live in the USA and move to Canada it’s not all that major of an adjustment. On the other hand, if you move to India or Japan then you are in for some real cultural changes.

One of the biggest frustrations will be the language barrier. It’s very important that you learn to speak the language as quickly as possible. The lack of being able to communicate will not only be a source of irritation for you but those that you are trying to converse with as well. You will find that in most countries if they see you the foreigner making an attempt to learn the language and adjust to their ways they will do everything possible to assist you.

Another very important aspect that needs to be attended to quickly is learning the laws of the country you have moved to. What may not seem important in your homeland could land you in jail in your new world. If possible you want to be aware of these even before you move from home.

Once you have learned these two major points then you can relax a little and learn all of the little things that make up the country. For example, the foods that are available to you and the type of cuisine that is favored. Then there is the educational system and the job availability that you may have to gain knowledge of.

If you have a good attitude about your move and hopefully it was a move that was favorable to you then you will find that you will adjust quickly.

Most likely in the beginning no matter how much you like your new living you are going to be homesick. This may slow down your adjustment period a bit but don't let it deter you from settling in. Try not to live in the past meaning every time you learn something new about your new country that you are not comparing it to your country. It’s OK to do this if it’s in a positive aspect. If on the other hand, you approach your new living in a negative fashion then it will be almost impossible for you to settle in and be happy. This will most likely make life miserable for you and in no time at all, you will be packing up and moving back home. This could mean that you have passed up a very important opportunity depending on your reason for making the move to the new country in the first place.
